Description
BBC profile:
Before the 1997 election, much of the old Bridlington seat was redrawn to correspond with the Borough of East Yorkshire, itself now subsumed into the East Riding unitary authority.

The Conservative John Townend, who had been MP for Bridlington, had a notional majority of more than 12,000 to defend, but an 8.7% swing to Labour cut the margin to little more than a quarter of that.

In 2001, Mr Townend was replaced as Tory candidate by Greg Knight, a former MP who had lost his seat at Derby North in 1997. In both 2001 and 2005, Mr Knight achieved swings in his favour and his 2005 majority was 6,283.

At this election, Rural Beverley is transferred to Beverley and Holderness in exchange for voters from the eastern Wolds. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

This constituency covers the northern parts of the East Riding of Yorkshire. Its main town is Bridlington.

Combining countryside and coast, it is traditionally dependent on farming, fishing and tourism.

Bridlington is a shellfish port and minor conference centre as well as a holiday resort with a large number of camp sites.

The west of the constituency, with the towns of Pocklington, Market Weighton and Stamford Bridge, is a popular area for commuters to Hull and York. Rural and small-town Yorkshire has become increasingly prosperous in recent years.
