BBC Profile:
Labour has held the constituency of Stalybridge and Hyde since 1945 lthough in 1955 the Conservatives got within 155 votes of winning it. Former Cabinet minister James Purnell has held the seat since 2001, securing an 8,348 majority in 2005. He is not contesting the seat in 2010.
