Description BBC Profile:
Rochdale has been held by all the three largest parties since 1945. The Liberals held sway between 1972 and 1997, when the seat was taken by Labour. However, Liberal Democrat Paul Rowen won the seat back in 2005 with a majority of 442.

At the election, the seat gains four part-wards from Oldham and Saddleworth, and one part-ward from Heywood and Middleton. It loses two part-wards to Heywood and Middleton. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

The birthplace of the co-operative movement, Rochdale is a manufacturing centre where engineering and textiles are the most important industries.

The constituency consists of the industrial town of Rochdale as well as the attractive, Pennine-hugging town of Littleborough and its environs.

Rochdale and Oldham are to be key beneficiaries of the plans for integrated Greater Manchester Transport plans to extend the Metrolink tram system, due to come into operation in 2011.
