Description BBC Profile:
The seat was held by Sir Mark Lennox-Boyd for the Conservatives from 1979 until 1997, when it was taken by Labours Geraldine Smith. She has held it since, winning by 4,768 in 2005, with a 0.4% swing to the Conservatives.

At the election, the seat loses the part-ward of Lower Lune Valley to Lancaster and Fleetwood. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

The seat contains the rural northern parts of Lancashire that border Cumbria, along with the seaside resort of Morecambe. Its two piers have both disappeared in recent years, one in a fire, the other a storm.

Morecambe and Lunesdale's local economy includes a fairly large construction industry. However, it has adapted to the service industry as well.

Cockle picking was a long-established and traditional industry in Morecambe. In 2004 21 Chinese immigrant cockle pickers died when they were trapped by rising tides.

Revitalising tourism has been a positive way for the area to increase its income, and Morecambe has welcomed more visitors in recent years.
