BBC Profile:
At the 2005 general election, Labours Keith Bradley lost his seat after 18 years to his Liberal Democrat opponent John Leech. Leech won with a majority of 767, after a swing of 17.3% towards his party.
At the election, the seat gains the part-ward of Chorlton from Manchester Central and the part-wards of Old Moat and Withington from Manchester Gorton. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
This mainly residential seat to the south of Manchester city centre includes the areas of Didsbury, Withington and Chorlton.
The number of owner-occupiers is low; those renting privately are well above the national average. This is mainly attributable to the students and young professionals who now live here. Large old houses have been divided up and converted into flats.
The area remains affluent and caf culture predominates.
There are council estates at Mersey Bank, Nell Lane, Old Moat and Burnage providing a quarter of the seats total housing. However, much of this has either been sold under the right-to-buy scheme or rented out privately.
The division has good transport links, and Chorlton will be added to the Metrolink tram system in 2011.
Rallings & Thrasher Notional:

Lab 15,664 (40.87%)
C 3,972 (10.36%)
Green 1,623 (4.23%)
Others 442 (1.15%)
