Description |
BBC Profile:
Former Labour MP turned indepent, Bob Wareing, has represented the seat since 1983, when he successfully challenged the incumbent Eric Ogden, who defected to the SDP in 1981.
Wareing, who was deselected in September 2007 in favour of former minister Stephen Twigg, won by 15,225, after a 2.7% swing to the Liberal Democrats.
At the election, the seat gains three part-wards from each of Liverpool Walton and Liverpool Wavertree. It loses four part-wards to Liverpool Walton and two part-wards to Liverpool Wavertree. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
This residential seat to the north-east of Liverpool is made up of both inner-city and suburban areas.
The seat is one of contrasts. Europe's largest private housing estate has been constructed within the constituency, the Croxteth Park Estate, built around the perimeterof the stately Croxteth Hall and Country Park.
While most jobs are in the public sector, other notable employers include Littlewoods Pools on Walton Hall Avenue, and Gillmoss Trading Estate which contains numerous small businesses.
