Description BBC Profile:
The ancestor seat of Liverpool Garston swapped between Labour and the Conservatives in the 1960s and 1970s but after it was won by Labour's Eddie Loyden in 1983, it has remained red ever since. Following Mr Loyden's retirement in 1997, Maria Eagle won the seat for Labour with a majority of 18,000. She won again in 2001 and 2005, but with significantly reduced majorities.
This new seat of Garston and Halewood comprises three wards from the old Knowsley South seat, four wards and a part-ward from the old Liverpool Garston seat and a part-ward from Liverpool Wavertree.

To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

Garston and Halewood, to the south of Liverpool, is a socially diverse seat. It combines some of the most well-heeled residential areas in the city, including Allerton and Woolton, with large council estates such as Speke. According to the 2001 census, about 30% of people in the area are living in social housing.

Garston includes some of the dockland that was devastated by the recession and decline of the shipping industry in the early part of the 1980s.

The economy of the area has been improved in recent years by the expansion of John Lennon International Airport.
