Description |
BBC Profile:
The old Manchester Blackley constituency has been Labour since 1964. Graham Stringer MP has held the seat since 1997 and in 2005 he won with a majority of more than 12,000.
At the election, the renamed Blackley and Broughton constituency is essentially made up of the old Manchester Blackley seat, with two wards added from Salford. It loses Moston ward and part of the City Centre ward to Manchester Central.
To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
Blackley and Broughton covers the inner-city wards of north Manchester. The constituency is mainly residential, with cramped terraces, declining suburbs and comparatively low levels of owner-occupation. Harpurhey in this seat was identified as the most deprived place in England in 2004.
Demographically, this multi-cultural seat contains significant Muslim, Irish, West Indian, Sikh and Polish populations. There is also a Jewish community concentrated in the Higher Crumpsall and Broughton Park areas.
Blackley's schools have enjoyed major investment and improvements. In Cheetham the new Temple School has been built with private finance initiative funding. The seat also contains King David's School, a predominantly Jewish institution that regularly ranks as one of the best performers in the country.
In the south of the seat is Strangeways Prison.
