Description |
BBC Profile:
Blackburn has been Labour since 1945. Justice Secretary Jack Straw has been the MP since 1979, succeeding Barbara Castle who held the seat for 34 years.
At the election, the seat loses the part-wards of East Rural, Fernhurst and North Turton with Tockholes to the Rossendale and Darwen constituency.
To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
Blackburn, in Lancashire, was once renowned as the weaving capital of the world, but like other textile towns, it has fallen on tougher times in recent decades, with relatively high levels of unemployment.
There remains a manufacturing base in the area, but most local jobs are now provided by the service sector.
The constituency is a mix of deprived inner-city wards dominated by Muslim voters, areas populated by white working class voters and some more affluent suburbs.
Several candidates from the far-right British National Party, and a small independent local group the For Darwen Party, have won seats on Blackburn and Darwen Council in recent years.
