Description

BBC Profile:
Across the Mersey from Liverpool, the seat of Birkenhead has been held by outspoken Labour MP Frank Field since 1979. He received 65% of the vote in 2005.
At the election, the seat gains two part-wards from Wirral South, and loses one part-ward to Wirral South and another to Wallasey.

Birkenhead is situated on the east bank of the Mersey facing Liverpool city centre.

Birkenhead has been the largest conurbation on the Wirral peninsula since its sudden development, prompted by shipyard prosperity, in the Victorian era. After a period of decline, most of the docks have been redeveloped and the shipyard is now a major repair facility.

The population is predominantly white and more than a quarter of people live in social housing.
