BBC Profile:
A Conservative seat since the 1930s, though with an earlier Liberal tradition, St Ives fell to the Liberal Democrats in 1997.
In 1997 the Liberal Democrat Andrew George took the seat on his second attempt with a swing of more than 8% and a majority of 7,170. In 2001 Mr George polled more than 50% of the vote, and he repeated this in 2005, with a majority of more than 11,600.

Fishing and agriculture play their part too. St Ives itself, with its wide sandy beaches, has hosted an artistic community since long before the opening of Tate St Ives in 1993, which helped to draw in thousands more visitors per year.
