BBC Profile:
As Truro and St Austell, this seat has had a mixed parliamentary history during the past 60 years. It was a Tory seat until 1974, when it fell to the Liberals, who have held onto it currently as the Liberal Democrats - ever since.

Incumbent Matthew Taylor won the seat in the 1987 election, at the age of 24. In 2001 he won with a majority of more than 8,000. And in 2005 Mr Taylor was elected for the fifth time, with a majority of 7,403.

The new seat is mainly comprised of wards from the old Truro and St Austell seat, combined with wards from south-west North Cornwall and two south-west wards from South East Cornwall. The new seat of St Austell and Newquay stretches from the south-east to the north-coast of Cornwall and takes in the huge rural expanse between the big tourist towns of St Austell and Newquay.

With output higher than ever, the china clay industry of St Austell (Cornwall's largest town) employs about 3,000 people.

But tourism is the biggest industry in the seat, with the Eden Project conservation centre and surfing town of Newquay both major attractions.
