Description BBC Profile:
North East Somerset is a new seat consisting of the old Wansdyke seat (minus the South Gloucestershire wards) and gaining an area to the north and eastern fringe of Bath wards.

In Boundary Commission changes to the constituencies of Avon County in 1983, Wansdyke and Woodspring were created as successor seats to the old North Somerset constituency. The new Wansdyke seat was captured by Conservative Jack Aspinwall. The current incumbent Dan Norris won the seat for Labour in 1997.

Bordering both Bristol in the west and circling Bath, the seat is evenly split between rural and urban areas. Given its strategic location, the seat is an ideal commuter area for both Bristol and Bath, and this gives it a residential and moderately affluent character.

Tourism provides a major source of revenue for local businesses. In decades past, coal and agriculture were the overwhelmingly dominant industries in Wansdyke. Farming continues but there has been no coalmining since 1973, when the Somerset coalfield at Midsomer Norton closed.
