Description BBC Profile:
In the 1992 general election Conservative MP Robert Adley held the seat with a majority of 23,000. However, at the by-election held one year later, after Mr Adley's death, Liberal Democrat Diana Maddock won the seat on a 35% swing, gaining a majority of over 16,000.

But Mrs Maddock failed to hold on in Christchurch in 1997, losing to the Conservative Christopher Chope by just over 2,000 votes.

Mr Chope currently enjoys a majority of 15,559.

Boundary changes will move the wards of Three Cross and Potterne, Verwood Dewlands, Verwood Newtown and Verwood Stephen's Castle to North Dorset, while Longham, Parley and Stapehill will move entirely within this seat. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

Christchurch is situated to the east of Bournemouth on the Dorset coast.

The constituency covers much more than the town of Christchurch itself and also includes Bournemouth Airport. The airport at Hurn has assisted in bringing in much industry to the area including VT Aerospace, AIM Aviation, and FR Aviation.

Over a third of the population is of pensionable age, and a relatively low number of people are engaged in active employment.
