For most of the post-war period, the Conservatives have received strong support in Cheltenham. But in 1992 there was a swing of nearly 6% to the Liberal Democrats, whose candidate Nigel Jones took the seat.

Jones consolidated the Lib Dem position over the next three elections, but stood down in 2005. He was replaced by Martin Horwood, who was subsequently elected MP, albeit with a majority of 2,303.

Boundary changes to the seat are minor and relate to the six wards that were shared between Cheltenham and Tewkesbury. Leckhampton, Oakley, Up Hatherley, and Warden Hill are now completely within Cheltenham's boundaries, while Prestbury and Swindon Village wards have moved in their entirety to Tewkesbury. Cheltenham is an elegant spa town situated on the edge of the Cotswold hills, and is slightly smaller in population than Gloucester, the county seat.

As Britain's largest inland spa, Cheltenham has been a popular tourist attraction since the first natural spring was discovered there more than 200 years ago. It is noted for the Victorian and Regency buildings which house a large proportion of its inhabitants.
