Description BBC Profile:
This seat has been Conservative since its creation in 1974. David Atkinson was successful in a 1977 by-election with 63% of the vote and, although his share gradually declined, he won in 2001 with a majority of 3,434. He stood down in 2005, and his successor Tobias Ellwood increased the Conservative majority by 1,800 votes.

Boundary changes at the general election will move Winton East part-ward to Bournemouth West, while part-wards Eastcliff and Springbourne, Moordown, and Queen's Park will move to this constituency. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

The constituency, which includes the communities of Boscombe, Southbourne and Throop, is traversed by the River Stour, which spills into Christchurch Bay.

Bournemouth is a fast-growing and prosperous town. Tourism remains the backbone of the local economy. Visitors enjoy its beaches and traditional seaside attractions, but increasingly they are also drawn to the area for its pubs and clubs.

Employment in Bournemouth is predominantly in the services sector. Financial services account for 10% of industry, while 20% of employment is in education, health and social work.
