Description |
BBC Profile:
The seat was represented by the Conservatives, apart from four years, from 1945 to 1997, when it was won for Labour by current MP Tom Levitt. At the 2005 general election he retained the seat, but by just 735 votes.
At the election, boundary changes have made the seat co-terminous with the High Peak Borough Council. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
High Peak is a mixed seat in a wild and beautiful corner of the southern Pennines which also includes some old industrial towns on the edges of Greater Manchester.
The northern part of the Peak District National Park occupies about 90% of this constituency, but contains only 10% of its population. The rest live in small- to medium-sized towns, which house many Greater Manchester commuters as well as those working locally.
Glossop and New Mills are traditionally textile towns. High Peak is important for limestone quarrying and cement production, and Tarmac Buxton Lime and Cements Tunstead site is one of the largest limestone quarries in Europe. Other large employers include Swizzels Matlow, the UKs leading childrens confectionery company, in New Mills, and Federal Mogul in Chapel-en-le-Frith. The manufacturing industry is still a large employer in the area. Not surprisingly, the other major industry is tourism.
