Description BBC Profile:
The seat has been held by Labour since the 1930s. Harry Barnes was the MP from 1987 to 2005. In 1997 he secured 60% of the vote. He was succeeded by Nathascha Engel, who recorded a five figure majority.

At the election, a small number of wards have been lost to Bolsover and Chesterfield. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

An oddly shaped constituency, North East Derbyshire surrounds Chesterfield on three sides. It is on the edge of the Peak District National Park and is a mixture of rural and town areas, bordering Sheffield at its northern edge.

The constituency stretches from the heavily industrialised parts to the south east of Sheffield, Eckington, Renishaw and Killamarsh to other former mining areas around Clay Cross. But it also includes rural and residential areas on the fringes of the Peak District, and the constituency's biggest town, Dronfield, is now largely a dormitory suburb for Sheffield.

The coal mines have almost entirely gone and much heavy industry has declined, but new employment has arrived in the shape of industrial estates, regeneration areas and work outside the constituency.
