The seat was held by Conservative former cabinet minister James Prior from 1959 to 1987. He was succeeded by David Porter, who retained the seat for the Conservatives in 1987, but his majority fell by 63% to 4,376 in 1992.
In 1997, Bob Blizzard, the Labour candidate, was elected with a majority of 12,093, in a 16.2% swing from the Conservatives. In 2005 Blizzard took 45% of the vote.
At this election, boundary changes will see Waveney lose the part-ward of Wrentham to Suffolk Coastal and gain the part-ward The Saints. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
The most easterly seat in Britain, Waveney is situated in the north-eastern corner of Suffolk. The constituency contains the coastal town of Lowestoft and the market towns of Beccles and Bungay.
Poor transport links have meant that much of the areas manufacturing industry has been relocated. Similarly, the decline in the number of tourists visiting the area is of increasing concern. However, thousands of tourists every year visit the Lowestoft Air Show in July; the two-day seafront show. The air show creates seasonal employment for the area, helped by over 40,000 staying tourists.
