Description
BBC Profile:
The East Worthing and Shoreham constituency was created for the 1997 general election at the same time as West Worthing by redistributing wards between the old Shoreham and Worthing seats.

In the 1997 general election the Conservative majority fell in both new constituencies by almost 5,000, with Labour enjoying a corresponding rise, but Tim Loughton was still elected with a majority of 5,000.

He retained the seat in 2001, and won in 2005 with a majority of 8,100.

At the election, the seat loses two part-wards to Worthing West. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

The seat is an eclectic mix, containing residential parts of East Worthing, industrial Shoreham-by-Sea, and smaller outlying communities.

The constituency has an above average concentration of elderly residents, who make up almost a quarter of the population.

There is a good deal of light industry in the area, and Shoreham is the premier Sussex port, serving a hinterland of over 400,000 people. In addition, many people are employed by the local authority, tourism and the service sector. Shoreham has a busy airfield, the oldest commercial airfield in the UK, used by flying schools, private pilots and the Sussex Police air support unit.

The constituency is adjoined by the South Downs, an area which gained National Park status in 2010.
