This seat has only ever elected Conservative MPs. Current incumbent Humfrey Malins was selected to contest the seat in the 1997 general election. Mr Malins had previously represented Croydon North West from 1983, but lost the seat to Labour in 1992. In 1997 he was tested by the presence of an 'Official Conservative Candidate', who appeared above him on the ballot slip and managed to obtain 3,933 votes. This and a swing to the Liberal Democrats reduced Malins' majority to 5,678 - a drop of over 12,000 from the notional 1992 majority.
In 2001, Malins' majority was 6,759. In 2005 his majority fell to 6,612.

Twenty five miles south west of London, Woking is the largest town in Surrey and has become a retail and service centre for the stockbroker belt. Extensive office development took place in the town centre in the 1980s, attracting industry based on new technologies.
The town has rapidly expanded in recent years in both population and business facilities which has led to redevelopment of the town's facilities, including the successful Ambassadors complex.
The majority of employers based in the constituency are local small and medium sized businesses, but large firms such as Cap Gemini, Ernst and Young and British American Tobacco have also relocated to the area and are employing ever-increasing numbers.
