Description BBC Profile:
This seat has had continuous Conservative representation since it came into existence, except for a short Liberal interlude in 1923-24. In 1997 new candidate Michael Fallon retained the seat for the party with a majority of 10,461.

He won again in 2001 with a majority of 10,154, and increased his majority to 12,970 in the 2005 election taking more than 50% of the votes cast.

At the election, the seat gains the part-wards of Farningham, Horton Kirby and South Darenth and Fawkham and West Kingsdown from Dartford, in exchange for the part-ward of Hartley and Hodsoll Street. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

The main centres of population are Sevenoaks itself, Swanley, Westerham, Dunton Green and New Ash Green.

The constituency is home to picturesque countryside, country houses, small towns and traditional Kent villages with great historical associations.

Sevenoaks has fast become commuter country, with direct rail services to London Bridge, Cannon Street, Blackfriars and Charing Cross.

It has one of the highest proportions of professional workers in the country. There is some light industry and an element of farming but the majority of inhabitants are owner-occupying middle-class commuters.
