Description BBC Profile:
Before 1997 Conservative MP Sir Anthony Durant had represented Reading West for more than 20 years. In the three general elections between 1983 and 1992 he consistently polled over 50% of the vote.

In 1997 a 15% swing to Labour gave their candidate Martin Salter a 2,997 majority. In 2001 Salter nearly tripled his majority to 8,894 votes. He retained the seat in 2005, but his majority was nearly halved. Salter is standing down at this election.

At this election, the seat gains the part-wards of Battle and Whitley from Reading East. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

Reading is a large Berkshire town, located where the river Kennet joins the Thames. Reading West is larger than its eastern counterpart, covering territory further to the west in the Newbury district, with its more affluent residential areas in a rural setting alongside the Thames.

The M25 is close by and the M4 passes near the constituency. The town's proximity to London has attracted national companies to set up headquarters and manufacture hi-tech products, particularly computers.

First Great Western operates the London to Cardiff/Swansea line that runs through Reading station, providing alternative links along the M4 corridor.
