In 1997 the current Labour MP Dr Phyllis Starkey won Labour the seat from the Conservatives with a swing of nearly 15%. In 2001 the Labour majority was reduced to less than 7,000, resulting from a 2.5% swing back to the Conservatives, plus a 9% drop in turnout.
The Conservatives' performance improved again in 2005 by a 3.6% swing, but it was not enough to remove Labour.
At the election, the new constituency of Milton Keynes South is made up predominantly from wards from the old Milton Keynes South West seat.However, the new seat now includes Bletchley and Fenny Stratford, and Walton Park as complete wards. The seat loses its predecessors part-wards of Campbell Park, Middleton and Wolverton. As well as some of the new town areas in Milton Keynes, this seat encompasses the old railway towns of Bletchley (famous for its Second World War code-breaking activities), Stony Stratford and Fenny Stratford.
The largest private employer in the constituency is the Open University. Otherwise employment, interest and money are represented by a host of enterprises, with the accent on information technology, design and engineering, and call-centres.
