The Conservatives had kept a consistent vote of almost 60% in the former seat of Windsor and Maidenhead until 1992.
For 50 years from 1942 Windsor and Maidenhead was served by just two Conservative MPs. In 1992 the seat's third MP, Michael Trend, had to make a choice after one term when the constituency was split in two. He opted to follow a minority of his electorate to Windsor, leaving the way open for Theresa May to take over Maidenhead, supplemented by 18,000 voters from Wokingham.
May won in 1997 and more than doubled her share of the vote.
In 2005 there was a 5.8% increase in support for the Conservatives aided by a 9.7% increase in turnout and the Conservative majority now sits at over 6,000 votes.
At the election, boundary changes include the loss of the Loddon ward to Reading East. The ward of Bray joins the constituency from Windsor. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
One of the most prosperous constituencies in the country, Maidenhead boasts thriving industries and pretty Thames-side villages.
The town of Maidenhead boasts old family firms as well as the European headquarters of multi-national company Hitachi, attracted by its good transport links and proximity to Heathrow Airport and the M4 motorway.
