Description BBC Profile:
In 1997 Labour's national success was reflected here, when Chris Pond gained the seat for the party with a majority of 5,779. This decreased to 4,862 in 2001.

In 2005 new candidate Adam Holloway, a former Grenadier Guards officer and television reporter, took the seat for the Conservatives, with a majority of 654.

There are no boundary changes affecting this seat.

Situated on the south bank of the industrially developed Thames estuary, Gravesham is centred on the north Kent towns of Gravesend and Northfleet. But numerous picturesque villages lie in the southern part of the seat.

Most residents are comfortably off, and around four-fifths work in the service sector, which has gradually replaced traditional industries. Gravesend today is a busy commercial town and serves a large area as a shopping centre.

There is a relatively high proportion of ethnic minorities in the constituency.

The constituency falls within the Kent Thameside area, one of the two principal growth areas within the Thames Gateway project which aims to provide 120,000 more homes and 180,000 jobs in the region by 2016.
