Description BBC Profile:
Conservative Peter Viggers has held this seat since it was created in 1974. His old five-figure majorities have come down to four figures and he achieved a lead of 5,730 in 2005 with Labour in second place. He is standing down at this election.

There are no boundary changes affecting this seat.

Gosport is a maritime seat. The peninsula faces Portsmouth to the east across the harbour and the Isle of Wight to the south across the Solent. The Portsmouth Naval Base has employed Gosport residents for hundreds of years, and strong psychological and economic ties to the armed services remain.

There are ship- and yacht-building facilities here, as well as various light industries.

The distribution of the labour force is heavily skewed towards managerial and skilled manual labour, and the workforce is particularly strong in mechanical, electrical, instrument engineering and high technology skills. Issues of local concern here include road congestion leading to the peninsula, and healthcare provision.
