BBC Profile:
Eastleigh was created in 1955 and represented by the Conservatives until the incumbent, Stephen Milligan, died in 1994. In the resulting by-election the Conservative majority of 17,702 became a Liberal Democrat lead of 9,239 for the new MP, David Chidgey.
In 1997 Chidgey was re-elected in 2001 with an improved share of the vote. Chidgey stood down in 2005 and the party selected the economist, journalist and former MEP Chris Huhne to replace him. He retained the seat by 568 votes.
At the election, the sole boundary change here is the loss of part of the Chandler's Ford West ward to Winchester. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
Eastleigh is an old industrial Hampshire town. It has a working-class base and many of its residents commute into neighbouring Southampton.
Historically, it was home to a rail works and a Pirelli factory, but most of the old industry is gone or going. The Pirelli factory has now been converted to flats. The constituency is also home to numerous wealthy villages along the Solent and river Itchen.
As a satellite of Southampton, Eastleigh tends to rely on the services provided by its larger neighbour.
