Description BBC Profile:
Labour MPs have consistently polled large majorities in Jarrow. In 2001 Stephen Hepburn received more than 66% of the vote, giving him a majority just short of 17,600. Stephen Hepburn's majority fell in 2005 to 13,904, yet this still represented about 40% of the vote.

At the election, boundary changes that will take effect sees the wards of Pelaw and Heworth (previously part of Gateshead East and Washington West) fall entirely within the Westminster constituency of Jarrow. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

The south Tyneside constituency of Jarrow will forever be linked with the Jarrow March of October 1936, a protest against the extreme poverty being experienced at the time in the northeast.

Traditional industries in the area such as coal mining and shipbuilding have almost vanished and new light industry has been encouraged.

Currently manufacturing remains the industry employing the most constituents, closely followed by wholesale, retail and trade.
