Description |
BBC Profile:
The new Gateshead seat incorporates wards from the constituencies of Tyne Bridge and Gateshead East and Washington West, both of which cease to exist at this general election.
In Gateshead East and Washington West, Sharon Hodgson's Labour majority fell at the 2005 election to 13,407 after a 7.3% swing to the Liberal Democrats. The MP for Tyne Bridge, David Clelland, has occupied the seat since 1985, winning in 2005 with a majority of 10,400, although here too there was a swing to the Liberal Democrats.
All the wards in the new constituency of Gateshead fall within the Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead. It recreates a constituency that existed between 1832 and 1950, essentially made up of Gateshead town centre.
Newcastle and Gateshead together form the core of Tyneside. The principal businesses in the Gateshead area include BAE Systems, Komatsu (UK), International Coatings and Myson Radiators. The nearby Metro Centre also provides plentiful employment for local people.
