Description BBC Profile:
The seat has been held by Mark Fisher, for Labour, since 1983. In 2005 he secured 52.9% of the vote and a majority of 9,774.

Minor boundary changes see little in the way of change to the constituency. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

The city of Stoke-on-Trent is an amalgamation of six towns that was created in 1910 with the federation of the boroughs of Hanley, Burslem, Longton and Stoke, together with the districts of Tunstall and Fenton. These are often referred to collectively as the Potteries.

These days the town is the administrative centre of the city and is celebrated as the home of famous pottery manufacturers Spode, Biltons and Portmeirion.

Hanley boasts a large shopping centre and also contains the city's cultural quarter, which consists of two refurbished theatres, the Royal and the Regent, along with the concert venue the Victoria Hall.
