This is Staffordshire's northernmost constituency, containing the town of Leek and Peak District countryside as well as the ex-mining communities of Biddulph and Kidsgrove.

Leek was traditionally a working-class, textiles-based market town but its horizons have expanded; it now provides a home to a growing number of commuters and has a locally focused services sector.

Britannia, part of Co-operative Financial Services, is based in the town and is the largest employer with 1,800 workers. Leek United Building Society, another mutual, is also based in the town. Exploiting its proximity to the National Park the area is developing a tourist sector.
