The seat was held by Harold Davies, for Labour, from 1945 to 1970, and by Sir David Knox, for the Conservatives from 1970 to 1997.

Sir David was succeeded by current MP Charlotte Atkins, for Labour, who won the 1997 general election with a 10,049 vote majority. Her majority was 2,438 in 2005.

Boundary changes mean that urban wards including Butt Lane, Kidsgrove, Ravenscliffe and Talke are leaving the seat to join Stoke-on-Trent North, while rural wards Alton and Churnet are joining the seat from the Stone constituency. This is Staffordshire's northernmost constituency, containing the town of Leek and Peak District countryside as well as the ex-mining communities of Biddulph and Kidsgrove.

Leek was traditionally a working-class, textiles-based market town but its horizons have expanded; it now provides a home to a growing number of commuters and has a locally focused services sector.

Britannia, part of Co-operative Financial Services, is based in the town and is the largest employer with 1,800 workers. Leek United Building Society, another mutual, is also based in the town. Exploiting its proximity to the National Park the area is developing a tourist sector.
