Description BBC Profile:
Delwyn Williams took this seat in 1979 for the Conservatives and lost it in 1983, the only gap in a long Liberal history, epitomised by long serving parliamentarians Clement Davies (1945-62), Emlyn Hooson (1962-79) and more recently Alex Carlile (1983-97), until Lembit Opik's election in 1997 for the Liberal Democrats.

He held the seat at the 2001 and 2005 general elections, with his majority at the latter being 7,173.

At this election, the Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant/Llansilin electoral division has been removed from Clwyd South and transferred to the Montgomeryshire constituency. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

This is a rural constituency covering the north of Powys. The main town is Newtown, just south west of Montgomery. Newtown is known as the birthplace of Robert Owen, and his former home is a museum. Other towns include Welshpool and, to the west, Machynlleth, one of the towns best associated with Owain Glyndwr's 15th century uprising.

The constituency's main income comes from the agricultural sector, light industry and a significant tourist trade. The population is older than average and this is exacerbated by a number of retirees moving into the area.
