Description |
BBC Profile:
This constituency has been represented by Labour's Martin Caton since he was elected, as a new MP, at the 1997 general election, when he increased the party's vote share for the seat to just below 54%. It fell to 47% in the 2001 general election as the Conservatives and Plaid Cymru made ground, and to 42% in 2005 as the Liberal Democrats gained. But Caton retained the seat with a majority of 6,703.
At this election boundary changes are negligible. The seat gained the small part of Clydach ward that was previously in Neath. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
This seat includes not only the scenic holiday area of the Gower peninsula, with its attractive seaside villages and many sandy beaches, but also the inland industrial area of the Lliw Valley.
The Gower peninsula was the first area in the UK to be designated as an Area of Outstanding Beauty in 1956. The area has a large number of caravan sites.
The Lliw Valley has a history of steel manufacture and anthracite mining. It now makes use of its position on the M4 corridor to attract new businesses.
There are pockets of wealth in Gower, particularly in the affluent Swansea suburb of Mumbles where the owner-occupancy rates are very high. As is common in coastal areas, this is a demographically older than average constituency, with the number of pensioners significantly above average.
