Description |
The Prohibition National Convention assembled in the Hotel LaSalle in Chicago IL. It was attended by 152 delegates. The Convention appointed a committee to work with the Farmer Labor Party, which accidentally scheduled its national convention in the same city and the same week. However, the two parties could not settle on a joint ticket.
On the first ballot for President, the results were: Varney 53, Hoover 42, Watkins 16, Smith 2 (Raleigh News & Observer, 7/13/1928). The Baltimore Sun reported Smith's vote for Sen. Simmons (Baltimore Sun, 7/13/1928).
Varney won on the second ballot: Varney 66, Hoover 45, Watkins 8, scattering 2.
James A. Edgerton VA, of the Farmer Labor Party, was nominated for VP on the first ballot by a vote of 68 to 29 for Frank S. Regan IL and five scattering.
