Description BBC Profile:
This constituency, formerly known as Blyth, was created in 1950. Eddie Milne replaced Alfred Robens as Labour MP in 1960, but he was de-selected by Labour in the February 1974 general election and ran as an Independent. He defeated the official Labour candidate, only to lose narrowly to John Ryman in the October 1974 election.

Mr Ryman was MP for Blyth Valley until 1987, when he was succeeded by Ronnie Campbell, who held on to the seat for Labour despite a strong challenge from the Social Democrats. In 1997, Mr Campbell established a majority of nearly 18,000, but by 2005 this had declined to 8,527.

There are no boundary changes affecting this seat.

Blyth Valley lies along the coast in Northumberland. It is immediately south of Wansbeck, east of Hexham, and to the north of North Tyneside and Tynemouth. The area was historically associated with coal mining, but the closure of the Bates Colliery in 1986 prompted alternative economic development in the constituency.

About 1m from the Lottery fund was earmarked for the regeneration of historic buildings in Blyth in 2007. A major 3m redevelopment of the town's Market Place began early in 2008.
