Description |
The 7th Democratic National Convention assembled in Smith & Nixon's Hall in Cincinnati OH. Each state was awarded two delegates per member of Congress.
Chairman: John E. Ward GA
James Buchanan was nominated for President over the incumbent, Franklin Pierce, on the 17th ballot. John C. Breckinridge was nominated for VP on the second ballot.
This was the first Democratic National Convention to report fractional votes on the first or last roll call ballot. Since the OC database does not accept fractions, here are the official votes of the ballots:
First Ballot - President
James Buchanan 135.5
Franklin Pierce 122.5
Stephen Douglas 33
Lewis Cass 5
17th ballot - President
Buchanan 296 (unanimous)
