BBC Profile:
The constituency was taken by Sinn Fein's Michelle Gildernew in 2001 after the retirement of Ken Maginnis, a moderate Ulster Unionist who had held the seat for 18 years.
Prior to this the seat had a colourful electoral history, having returned nationalist publican Frank Maguire until his death in 1981. In the subsequent by-election Maze prisoner and hunger striker, Bobby Sands, dramatically took the seat and after his death he was briefly succeeded by his electoral agent, Owen Carron.
Ms Gildernew took the seat by a small margin in the 2001 election after Enniskillen bomb survivor Jim Dixon split the unionist vote that had previously fallen in behind Mr Maginnis. The Democratic Unionist Party's Arlene Foster - who defected from the Ulster Unionists in 2003 - has emerged ahead of her former party in recent polls, pushing them into third place in the 2005 general election. In that election Ms Gildernew extended her majority to 4,582.

The constituency has a significant manufacturing sector as well as having the largest number of agricultural workers in Northern Ireland. The tourism sector also makes a significant contribution to the local economy. The local manufacturing industry and the tourist industry come together in Belleek, where the pottery manufacturer attracts 200,000 visitors a year. Other attractions include Castle Coole, Enniskillen Castle and Florence Court.
Also important for attracting visitors are the beautiful Fermanagh waterways, with the centrepiece being Lough Erne. These waterways are notable for being maintained by Waterways Ireland, one of the first examples of a successful cross-border body.
