Impressive margin for a write-in.

A political neophyte, Stump, president of the UMW district that covered most of Virginia, announced his candidacy on Oct. 18, but had time to swamp McGlothlin, who was seeking his 12th term.

McGlothlin asked the thousands of miners in the district for support, but his son, Donald Jr., a circuit judge, levied more than $31 million in fines against the UMW during its strike against the Pittston Coal Group Inc.

Sounds like miners went out in force to write-in Stump and to punish McGlothlin for his sons actions.
