Description BBC Profile:
Before the 1997 general election Dudley was divided into East and West constituencies, rather than the current North and South.

The seat was won by Labour in 1997. In 2005 it was retained for the party by Ian Austin with a majority of 5,432 votes.

Boundary changes mean all of Gornal, St James, and St Thomas wards are now inside Dudley North. The whole of Coseley East ward was transferred into Wolverhampton South East. Coseley East's departure takes a substantial triangular wedge from the north-eastern flank of this constituency. Other readjustments were very minor. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

Dudley North contains most of the heart of Dudley, including the town centre, as well as the small towns of Gornal and Sedgley.

The St Thomas and Castle and Priory wards come high on deprivation indices. Gornal and Sedgley are more middle-class, residential suburbs by contrast.

Education provision for primary school age pupils is very good, with a falling birth rate resulting in spare places.
