Description |
South Carolina's electors were appointed by the state legislature and not by popular vote.
The legislature, unhappy with the treatment by northern Whigs of Hugh L. White, a moderate states rights U.S. Senator, decided at first not to participate in the 1836 presidential election. However, on 12/6/1836, the legislature changed its mind. It instructed its Presidential Electors to vote for Senators Willie P. Mangum of NC and John Tyler of VA.
