Description |
Special election to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of openly gay State Sen. Cheryl Ann Jacques (D-Needham). Jacques is leaving the State Senate to become the Executive Director of the Human Rights Campaign, a gay rights advocacy group.
Facing a 34 - 6 deficit in the State Senate, Massachusetts Republicans are always on the lookout for opportunities to increase their flatlined numbers, and this special election presents a key opportunity to show they can be a legitimate second party in the state. This seat was held by the GOP before Jacques, and Massachusetts Republicans are cautiously optimistic about their chances. The biggest hurdle to victory is the date on which this primary was scheduled -- March 3, 2004 -- which makes this special election fall on the same day as the Massachusetts Presidential Primary.
Mitt Romney received 59% of the vote in this district, which is one of the more Republican districts in the state.
