BBC Profile:
Labour has won this seat at every general election since 1950 when it was formed from part of Yardley. Former home secretary and chancellor Roy Jenkins was the first MP of Stechford, as it was then known, and he held the constituency for 27 years.
Jenkins' departure in January 1977 to Brussels to become President of the European Commission prompted a by-election in which control passed to the Conservatives. Terry Davis won the constituency back for Labour at the general election two years later. His majority increased with each subsequent election to a 43.9% margin in 2001.
At the election, boundary changes see Bordesley Green, spanning the south section of the constituency to the west of Birmingham Yardley, brought fully inside this seat, along with Washwood Heath. Part of Stechford and Yardley North went to Birmingham Yardley. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
Hodge Hill consists of a wedge-shaped portion of Birmingham fanning out from Saltley towards the eastern suburbs, and comprises the four wards of Bordesley Green, Hodge Hill, Shard End and Washwood Heath.
