Description |
BBC Profile:
Romford was Conservative between 1974 and 1997, but when New Labour took power at Westminster the seat was taken by Labour's candidate Eileen Gordon. Tory Andrew Rosindell won it back in 2001 and increased his share of the vote in 2005.
Under the latest boundary changes, Romford gains Hyland ward from the old Hornchurch constituency and has partial losses to the new Hornchurch and Upminster seat.
To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
Romford, in north east London, is seen as a traditional market town. It has experienced considerable growth in the last five years, with a number of new housing and retail developments.
Of those residents not employed locally in shops or offices, many commute to central London via Liverpool Street Station. The new Crossrail service, due to be completed in 2017, will also stop at Romford.
Demographically, the seat is overwhelmingly white, with a mixture of middle-class and skilled working class residents.
The new Queens hospital opened in Romford in 2006, to replaced Oldchurch hospital, which has been demolished and the site redeveloped for housing.
