Margaret Thatcher was MP for this seat from 1959 until 1992, when it passed to fellow Conservative Hartley Booth. In 1997 Labours Rudi Vis beat the Conservative candidate John Marshall. He went on to hold the seat in the 2001 election, slightly increasing his share of the vote. He kept it in 2005 with a majority of 741, after a 3.4% swing to the Conservatives.
At the election, the constituency loses one part ward (Coppetts) to Chipping Barnet and one part-ward (Mill Hill) to Hendon. It gains part of Woodhouse ward from Chipping Barnet and small parts of Finchley Church End, Garden Suburb and Golders Green wards from Hendon.
