Description |
BBC Profile:
Dagenham has been a Labour seat since 1945, held most recently by Jon Cruddas. In 2005, he took 50% of the vote, compared to 25% for the Tories. The British National Party received nearly 10% of the vote in 2005.
Major boundary changes have created the new Dagenham and Rainham constituency, with the wards of Chadwell Heath, Eastbrook, Heath, River, Village and Whalebone from the old Dagenham seat, and the wards of Elm Park, Rainham and Wennington and South Hornchurch from the old Hornchurch seat.
To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
Dagenham's economic history is intertwined with the history of the massive Ford motor works; however, the company stopped full car production in Dagenham in 2002. There is a relatively small industrial area around Rainham, home to Tilda Rice Ltd and Rainham Steel.
As part of the Thames Gateway Regeneration projects the area will benefit from redevelopment and improved transport links. Beam Reach Business Park aims to extend the economic development of the area and stimulate investment in manufacturing.
The new seat is also due to get improved bus and rail links in the next few years.
Demographically, it is predominantly white working class.
