| Description |
This election saw CSU support drop 17% in popular votes and an overall loss of about 25% of their seats. Minister-President Günther Beckstein, who ascended to the position with the resignation of Edmund Stoiber in 2007, resigned to take responsibility for the massive loss of seats.
No party having achieved a majority of seats on their own, the CSU formed a governing coalition with the FDP. Horst Seehofer was elected to the CSU leadership following the resignation of Beckstein and party chairman Erwin Huber, and became the next minister-president.
