Leadership Convention
March 6-8, 2009 (leadership voting held on March 7)
Hamilton Convention Centre, Hamilton, Ontario
Advance voting was available via mail or internet by preferential ballot. "Real time" voting occurred on March 7, 2009. Those voting on March 7 voted for one candidate only per balloting round.
Votes of regular party members were weighted at 75% while votes from party affiliates (mostly labour unions) were weighted at 25%.
First ballot:
Andrea Horwath - 4,625.29 weighted votes (37.1%)
Peter Tabuns - 3,437.93 (27.6%)
Gilles Bisson - 2,954.23 (23.7%)
Michael Prue - 1,438.44 (11.5%)
Prue dropped off the ballot and endorsed Bisson.
Second ballot:
Andrea Horwath - 5,259.06 (43.6%)
Peter Tabuns - 3,819.82 (31.7%)
Gilles Bisson - 2,988.12 (24.8%)
Bisson dropped off the ballot and endorsed Horwath.
Third ballot:
Andrea Horwath - 6732.34 (60.4%)
Peter Tabuns - 4420.66 (39.6%)
Andrea Horwath elected Leader of the New Democratic Party of Ontario.
