BBC Profile:
Nicholas Fairbairn held Perth and Kinross for two decades for the Conservatives until his death in 1995. The resulting by-election was won by the SNP's Roseanna Cunningham, who increased her majority in 1997 (when the seat was renamed Perth). Her successor Annabelle Ewing had a considerably closer fight in the 2001 general election, holding the seat by 48 votes from the Conservatives.
Boundary changes in 2005 merged North Tayside, Perth, and Ochil into two new constituencies: Perth and North Perthshire and Ochil and South Perthshire. Annabelle Ewing fought (and lost) in Ochil and South Perthshire while Pete Wishart was selected to fight Perth and North Perthshire for the SNP and he was returned to Westminster with a majority of 1,521.
There are no boundary changes affecting this seat.
Framed by the Grampian Mountains in the north-west and the Firth of Tay in the southwest, Perth and North Perthshire includes a series of idyllic towns in Highland Perthshire as well as Lochs Tay, Tummel and Rannoch. Around half of the electorate resides in the prosperous town of Perth, once the effective capital of Scotland, but the seat also includes some of the most fertile farming land in Scotland. The constituency has twice the average number of constituents for Scotland employed in agriculture, and many are employed in the soft fruit sector: the seats farmlands are famous for fruit-growing, especially strawberries and raspberries. Both Scottish and Southern Energy and Stagecoach are based in Perth and are major employers.
At the heart of the constituency lies the picturesque town of Pitlochry, as well as nearby Killiecrankie, where the Jacobite rebel, John Graham of Claverhouse, better known as Bonnie Dundee, defeated the English in 1689. The skiing area of Glenshee; Birnam Wood, made famous by Shakespeares Macbeth; and the historic town of Scone, once home of the Scottish kings and the Stone of Destiny, are all popular tourist destinations.
