In 1987 Labour's Henry McLeish inherited the then Central Fife seat from legendary anti-monarchist Willie Hamilton, which he retained with more than half the popular vote in both 1992 and 1997.
In 2001 McLeish switched to the Scottish Parliament and was replaced as Labour candidate by John MacDougall, who held Central Fife.
The current Glenrothes seat includes the whole of Central Fife along with additional wards from Dunfermline East and Kirkcaldy. At the 2005 general election John MacDougall lost 6% of his vote share but he achieved more than 50% of the vote, returning to Westminster with a majority of 10,664.
MacDougall died in August 2008 after a long illness. In the subsequent by-election in November 2008 Lindsay Roy held off SNP candidate Peter Grant, winning with a majority of 6,737.
There are no boundary changes affecting this seat.
This Fife seat is centred on the new town of Glenrothes and includes the industrial ports of Leven and Methil. Parts of the constituency have serious deprivation problems, in particular the Methil area.
The main industries were once coal and linoleum, but diversification has made Glenrothes a centre for the electronics industry.
Glenrothes is the administrative capital of Fife and there are many local authority jobs. It contains the headquarters of the council and the police force.
